Ayush Sanghavi (2020, Law)
Ayush Sanghavi has been on quite a journey—founding CaseSnappy and, at the time of writing, preparing to head off to Yale for two years as a Mellon Fellow. Along the way, he’s brought curiosity, creativity, and a fresh perspective to how law is studied and understood.
“Growing up in Beaconsfield, I had always been drawn to the study of law. I enjoyed debating, my parents would always say I was quite good at arguing! More than that, I appreciated the transferable skills in legal training and its potential to open doors to a wide range of careers.
My sister studied medicine at Sidney Sussex College, so Cambridge University felt like a natural choice. I chose Clare for its central location and reputation for being full of genuinely nice people.
In my final year, I wrote my dissertation on ‘Giving rap a chance: the cultural policing and consequences of the suppression of rap music in England in the twenty-first century' and was awarded the Lady Clare Precious Pearl prize. My dissertation was later published in the Journal of Law and Society. Though unconventional for a law dissertation, the topic reflected my passion for rap and hip-hop music.
Outside of Law, I was actively involved in college life. I coxed for the boat club, played squash and football, and participated in societies including the Human Rights Law Society and Majlis, the University South Asian Society.
For my third year, I took the opportunity to study abroad at the University of Regensberg, Germany: predominately studying law, but also exploring courses in art and architecture and undertaking an intensive German language programme.
I love the freedom and variety that come with building something from scratch, and I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get stuck in.
It was during this time that the idea for CaseSnappy began to form. During my law studies at Cambridge, I was faced with the challenge of reading 50-70 cases every few weeks, so I created a tool that could streamline the process and allow myself and other students to focus on deeper analysis. Using my free time in Germany, I then developed CaseSnappy – an AI-powered platform that breaks down complex cases into summaries of the facts, issues, decisions, and key passages.
Launched in May 2023, CaseSnappy now supports over 4000 students across almost 100 UK universities and is also about to launch internationally, offering the same support to students in Australia, the USA, Canada, Kenya and Ireland. The driving force behind the app is AI literacy, encouraging students to use AI responsibly and accessibility of legal information.
As for Yale, I have always had the dream to study in the US, and I’m hoping to explore broader interests including culture, innovation, business management, software development, and the ethical dimensions around AI – all skills that I hope to learn and bring back to take CaseSnappy further forward. As a lifelong fan of hip hop, I’m also excited to delve deeper into research on rap music in its cultural birthplace.
After saying goodbye to Clare and celebrating with close friends, I’m excited to be diving into this next big chapter. My phone is packed with ideas I’ve been jotting down for years. I love the freedom and variety that come with building something from scratch, and I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get stuck in. Therefore, my long term goal is to be a founder, an entrepreneur and to shape my own path, and keep creating tools that make a real difference. One thing is for sure – my time at Clare left me with lifelong friendships and unforgettable experiences.”
