“Participating in the Clare College / Tower Hamlets Partnership for Schools was a pivotal experience during my A Levels. This initiative
aimed to bridge educational disparities and provide opportunities for students from Tower Hamlets, like myself, to explore the world of
higher education and consider Cambridge for undergraduate study. The program played a significant role in influencing my decision to apply to Clare. Beyond academic pursuits, it instilled in me a profound sense of social responsibility and a commitment to making a positive impact through education. The experience underscored the importance of fostering inclusivity and access to education, values that have continued to guide my professional journey.

My undergraduate years at Clare College were a rich tapestry of academic exploration, camaraderie, and personal growth. Among my best memories are the late-night debates in the Cellars, where diverse perspectives merged into thought-provoking discussions. The intellectual vibrancy of Clare, combined with the historic beauty of the college, created an inspiring environment. The lasting friendships forged during formative moments, both inside and outside the lecture halls, contributed to a sense of community that extended well beyond my time as an undergraduate.

College life at Clare was full of unexpected delights. From the diverse range of extracurricular activities to the chance encounters in the Fellows’ Garden that often led to fascinating conversations, every day brought new experiences. The unexpected friendships formed in the most serendipitous moments added depth to my overall undergraduate experience. These moments of spontaneity and connection contributed significantly to the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere at Clare.

Navigating the job market after graduation was a process that drew on the skills and network I developed during my time at Cambridge. Leveraging the valuable connections with alumni, attending career events, and utilising the career services provided valuable insights into the financial industry. The rigorous academic training and practical experiences at Clare equipped me with the analytical and interpersonal skills crucial for success in a competitive job market.

Over the past 17 years, my career journey has been marked by enriching experiences. From my roles at Lehman Brothers and Nomura in London, a six year stint in Hong Kong to my current position at BlackRock in Singapore, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to dynamic financial environments. Particularly memorable was navigating the challenges posed by the global financial crisis and Hong Kong during the democracy protests and the global pandemic, experiences that underscored the resilience and adaptability required in the industry. This extended period has been particularly challenging and transformative, navigating the complexities of the financial industry amid significant geopolitical events and a global pandemic. The experience in Hong Kong underscored the importance of adaptability, resilience, and a commitment to fostering stability in turbulent times. These varied experiences have not only shaped my professional identity but also deepened my understanding of the intricate dynamics that influence financial markets and global economies.

Reflecting on my career since graduating from Clare, the most useful things I learned at Cambridge have been the critical thinking and analytical skills. These skills have been invaluable in approaching complex issues systematically and communicating effectively. Additionally, the emphasis on collaboration and diverse perspectives has shaped my leadership style, fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity. The academic rigour and exposure to diverse perspectives at Clare have been foundational in navigating the complexities of the financial industry.

My hopes and aspirations for the future centre around continuous learning and contributing meaningfully to the intersection of finance and technology. I aim to leverage my experiences to drive positive change in the industry, fostering innovation and sustainable practices. The strong foundation laid during my time at Clare, both academically and socially, continues to guide my aspirations for the future.

If I could give advice to my 18-year-old self, I would emphasise the importance of embracing change and uncertainty. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Be open to diverse experiences, build genuine connections, and never underestimate the power of resilience. Your journey will be marked by unexpected twists, but each turn will contribute to a richer mosiac of personal and professional fulfilment.”

Clare continues to work with schools in Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Coventry and Warwickshire as part of the University’s Area Links Scheme.
